About neonatology
Neonatology is a branch of pediatrics.
A neonatologist is a pediatric specialist who treats newborns from birth to the end of the first month of life.
A neonatologist performs the first examination of a newborn and assesses the child’s health after birth. The neonatologist also gives advice to mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding, about the vaccines that the baby needs to receive while still in the maternity ward, about the care of the newborn, the possibility of colic and their relief, as well as about all the next steps that need to be taken until the first check-up with the pediatrician.
In our hospital, several neonatologists are available who take care of newborn babies with great care and devotion. Sometimes it happens that a baby is born with certain problems or has them after birth, especially if it was born prematurely, which requires special attention, certain diagnostics and further treatment. Even after the newborn period, these babies belong to the group of high-risk children who require further intensive monitoring and treatment, so that the complications are completely remedied, or remain as little as possible.
This includes a special diet plan, continuous monitoring of physical growth and development, psychomotor development, vision, hearing and speech, general
health status, prevention and treatment of acute, as well as continued treatment of chronic diseases.
This complex issue requires a multidisciplinary approach and well-managed teamwork of doctors from different specialties. In our hospital, there is a specialized outpatient clinic for the monitoring of high-risk newborns, which is led by Dr. honey Branka Kovačević, specialist in pediatrics, subspecialist in neonatology with many years of experience in this field.
